Marking indoors, especially on furniture, is a frustrating behaviour for many dog owners. Marking is not the same as a housetraining accident. Instead of relieving themselves because they need to, dogs mark by releasing small amounts of urine to communicate or claim territory. It is an instinctive behaviour often driven by hormones, environmental changes, or stress.

While marking is natural, it becomes a problem when it happens indoors.

Positive Interrupter

If you catch your dog in the act of marking indoors, use a positive interrupter to distract them. This could be a sound, a toy, or even a treat to redirect their attention. Avoid any form of reprimand, as this can create fear or anxiety, which may worsen the behaviour. Instead, calmly distract your dog and guide them outside to finish eliminating. Once they do, reward them generously with praise or a treat. Understand Triggers and Address the Cause

Marking serves as a way for dogs to communicate. It could be a signal of territory, dominance, or even reproductive status. Dogs may also mark in response to changes in their environment, such as new furniture, visitors, or other pets in the household. While intact males are the most common culprits, neutered or spayed dogs may mark under certain conditions, such as stress or anxiety.

Changes in the household, the presence of unfamiliar scents, or perceived threats to their territory can all lead to marking. Identify and address these triggers to help prevent the behaviour. For example, introducing new furniture or visitors should be accompanied by positive associations, such as treats or playtime, to reduce your dog’s need to mark.

Spaying or Neutering

Spaying or neutering is one of the most effective ways to reduce marking behaviour, especially in young dogs. Hormonal drives are a significant factor in marking, and altering your dog can greatly diminish this instinct. However, for dogs that have been marking for an extended period, training and behaviour modification will still be necessary alongside neutering.

Thorough Cleaning & Supervision

Dogs are drawn to areas they have previously marked. Thoroughly clean any marked spots with an enzymatic cleaner to eliminate all traces of odor. Avoid ammonia-based cleaners, as these can mimic the smell of urine and encourage further marking. Ensuring the furniture or area no longer smells like a marked spot is key to breaking the cycle.

Close supervision is essential when retraining a dog that marks indoors. If you cannot actively supervise, confine your dog to a crate or a specific room where marking is less likely. Physical barriers, such as baby gates, can keep dogs away from furniture they are prone to mark.

Reinforce Desired Behaviours

Reward your dog for eliminating outdoors to reinforce the correct behaviour. Frequent trips outside, especially after meals, drinking, or waking up, will provide ample opportunities for your dog to relieve themselves in appropriate areas. When your dog marks outdoors instead of indoors, offer treats or praise to encourage the behaviour.

Using deterrents can help discourage marking. Commercial sprays designed to make areas unappealing for dogs to mark are a good short-term solution. However, these should be combined with behaviour modification techniques to ensure long-term success. Gradually desensitize your dog to situations or triggers that lead to marking while reinforcing calm, appropriate behaviour.

Consistency is Key

Eliminating marking indoors requires consistency and patience. Dogs thrive on clear communication and a stable routine. Ensuring that your training methods are consistent will help your dog understand what is expected of them. Remember, marking is an instinctive behaviour, and punishment without addressing the underlying cause will only lead to confusion.

If marking persists despite your efforts, consider consulting a professional trainer or behaviourist. Persistent marking can sometimes indicate deeper behavioural or medical issues that require expert intervention.
